DocuCom PDF Trial watermark appears when opening PDF files

Problem:

When opening PDF files in PaperPort PageViewer or PDF Converter Professional, a "DocuCom PDF Trial" watermark appears on each page.

Cause:

This issue is not related to product activation. Incorrect permission in the Microsoft Windows Registry will result in this watermark being displayed.

Solution:

To remove the "DocuCom PDF Trial" watermark from PDF files, please use the following steps:

Note: These steps include modifying the Windows Registry. Confirm that the user is logged on as the Administrator before attempting these steps. Please follow each step carefully and in the order listed:

  1. Close PaperPort and/or PDF Converter Professional.
  2. Click "Start > Run" or type "Run" in the Start Search field.
  3. Type "regedit" and click "OK".
  4. In case any issues should result from editing the registry, please export a backup copy by clicking "File > Export".
    • Note: Save this file to the Windows Desktop and name the file "backup". The "backup" should be retained for a few days and if no issues exist the file can then be deleted.
  5. Navigate to the following registry location:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ScanSoft
  6. Right-click on the above key.
  7. Choose "Permissions".
  8. Confirm that FULL CONTROL and READ are checked off in the "Allow" column for the user currently accessing the system.
  9. Ensure the same settings are enabled for Administrators, Creator Owner and Users if available.
  10. Repeat the above previous steps to modify the following registry key:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ScanSoft
  11. Uninstall PaperPort, PDF Create! and PDF Converter Professional using "Add or Remove Programs" or "Programs and Features" in the Windows Control Panel.
  12. Run the remover utility for the Nuance application removed in the previous step using the instructions from the corresponding Technote listed below:
  13. Reboot the system.
  14. Following reboot, re-start the installation for the Nuance application and follow each step as they are displayed.
